'Relapse' is my favourite album. At first, I hated it with all my heart. But then I couldn't leave it behind.
'Relapse' is not just about Eminem's relapse on drugs, but the relapse into old clichés, dry humour, and his life's biggest irony: his mother. Without her, Eminem would not exist.
And so, in my redesign of 'Relapse', I try to show the Eminem between 2006 and 2009 that I imagine. The one that hits bottom and tries to overcome his drug addiction, the death of his best friend, and his failed attempt of break away from what made him famous: his mother. At the same time, he suffers the internal struggle between being Slim Shady or a proper father for his daughters.
I decided to design a transvestite Eminem because, if Eminem were actually a serial killer, he would not be the kind of Buffallo Bill killer. He would be more like a Norman Bates kind of killer, but blond. Because… you know, his mom.
In short, in the words of Eminem himself:
"My mom loved Valium and lots of drugs.
That's why I am like I am cause I'm like her.
Because my mom loved Valium and lots of drugs.
That's why I'm on what I'm on cause I'm my mom".
