Are you a fan of Louis Armstrong, Fats Waller, Bix Beiderbecke, Jelly Roll Morton, Red McKenzie, Frankie Trumbauer, Jimmy Dorsey, or Eddie Lang? So is Philadelphia's own jazz musician Drew Nugent! Design vintage circus inspired cover art for his latest album “I’ll Never Be the Same” for a chance to win $750 cash!

Inspired by the 1920s, Drew Nugent (known for his band Drew Nugent & The Midnight Society) is a talented jazz musician. Drew pulls inspiration from 1900 - 1934 Jazz, Blues, Pop and Ragtime music. Design an album cover and CD art inspired by vintage circus artwork. Attached is template artwork which can be modified to feature your unique interpretation of Drew Nugent, or create your own cover design with a similar style.

Create your design with a folk art or iconic art nouveau style to elegantly capture the swing sounds of the 20s and 30s. Not familiar with art nouveau? This vintage design style is characterized by intricate linear designs and flowing curves based on natural forms. Put your own modern spin on vintage art style with this project, bringing the spirit of jazz to life within your circus theme. Feel free to modify and manipulate this beautiful poster design owned by the Shelburne Museum any way you see fit, or simply create your own (requirements and restrictions listed below).

The Shelburne Museum has kindly dedicated this artwork for use for inspiration and modification in The Drew Nugent Album Design Contest (all rights reserved).

Suggested Theme & Style Guidelines

The circus was a popular entertainment destination, as were the raving Jazz houses of the 1920s. These were places where families, couples, and the wild came for a good time -  full of color, vibrance, music and laughter. Modify this existing poster design to incorporate your impression of Drew Nugent within the portrait section, or use it to inspire your original concept featuring Drew Nugent and/or other jazz band or circus members.

Let the many characters of a spunky jazz musician take form within your circus tent for an original twist on a retro-inspired design. How does Drew take on the role of the Ring Master, and who takes the gig as the Lion Tamer? What juggling act does a jazz musician perform, and at what great heights does he walk the tightrope? Your designs should reflect the vintage vibe of the music, as if it has been down the road a few times. Think of weathered patina, an album that is worn but loved.
